With Michael Bay as the producer and Marcus Nispel as the director the horror series Texas Chainsaw Massacre got revived in 2004. Now the team gathered together again to give the ice hockey mask wearing killer Jason Vorhees another appearance on the big screen. But you can’t really call Friday the 13th (2009) a remake. The story of the first part with Jason’s Mother gets explained with a short flashback at the beginning of the movie, then Jason takes over. Well, as usual for this series at first a party of unsympathetic mid twenties, which want to sweeten their lifes with drugs, alcohol and sex, but find the contrary in Jason’s machete. Despite some unused elements like in example that Jason also builds up traps for his victims Friday the 13th (2009) is sure an entertaining horror movie and is on the contrary to lots of other remakes/sequels/prequels/whatever-productions at least no insult to the original.

When the movie started in the theatres the longer home cinema version already got announced by Platinum Dunes. They promised not a standard unrated-version, but a “completely new movie”, which shall be called Killer Cut . Well at least one of these prophecies came true. With the killer cut they really didn’t create a usual unrated-version, since this version got also shown to the MPAA and got an r-rating just like the theatrical version. Though this version has more erotic as well as violence, everything stays within the scope the fans had like to see busted in this version. Moreover it appears a bit odd that the MPAA rating descriptions of both versions are identical just that the word “nudity” got added at the killer cut. In fact a lot of the extensions are to find in the range erotic – the element which already got exploited enough in the theatrical version. Speaking of exploiting, the violence scenes could have gotten extended even more or have been crated more creatively since they still look pretty tame in comparison to Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning and at a lot of kills, like in the MPAA cuts that have bothered old Jason-appearances, the scene often gets switched quickly. At the killer cut there are just a few moments which could have problems with censorship – the most critical scene is without question Trent’s kill that reminds of TCM:TB.

In Europe, Paramount will only release the theatrical version on DVD and Blu-ray. Who wants to have the killer cut needs to get it imported from the USA. DVD buyers can choose between both versions since both versions, the theatrical version as well as the killer cut are available separately. Who gets the confirmed region free American blu-ray, has both versions at once.

For this cut report the US DVD von New Line Home Entertainment (theatrical version, R-Rated) got compared with the US DVD von New Line Home Entertainment (Killer Cut, R-Rated).

This report has been written by Clemens Eisenberger and got translated to English by Jesse Connors. Thank you for your continuous effort in the making of this edition of the report.
